Located about 3500 feet above sea level, Vagamon enjoys a cool climate with temperatures ranging from 13 degree Celsius to 24 degree Celsius in summer, and nine degree Celsius to 15 degree Celsius in winter. The borders of the village are defined by the Idukki reservoir on the eastern side, the Western Ghats on the north and the plains of Kottayam district to the south and west. River Meenachil starts flowing from Vagamon, beautifying the surrounding areas.

Vagamon is a good place for paragliding. Kolahalamedu, which lies four km away, recently hosted an international paragliding festival - the first of its kind in Kerala.

As you wind your way up through the green capped hills and tea plantations , the plains come in to your view thousands of feet below us, in night the view is spectacular as the whole plain would look illuminated . The flora consists of about 200 varieties of plants, 20 varieties of grasses, about 20 acres of pine trees and rare orchids, apart from the tea plantations. About 20 varieties of balsams can be seen here.

The animals found here are Small Indian Civets, porcupines, hares, Toddy cats (also known as the Asian Palm Civet), Martens, flying squirrels, Slender Loris and so on. Vagamon also has a wide variety of birds including the Malabar Grey Hornbill, the Malabar Parakeet, the Spotted Dove, the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, the Ceylon Frog Mouth, the Great Hornbill and the Hill Mynah

Vagamon Kurisumala


Picturesque Kurisumala is located about eight km from Vagamon. During Easter, this Christian pilgrim centre attracts thousands of devotees to the church atop the hill.

Muruganmala


Murugan Mala, to the east of Kurisumala, is a hill that houses a rock-cut temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. Hundreds of devotees visit the place every year

Thangal Para


A journey of about five kilometers from Vagamon, down the Elappara route, will take you to the Thangal Para, place of religious significance to Muslims. There is a Durgah here which is the resting place of Husrath Sheikh Fariduddin Baba, a Sufi saint, who is believed to have reached Kerala from Afghanistan about 800 years ago. Ganjusakkar (a sweet dish) is  the main offering here and the festival, Uroos, is conducted during the month of April.

Kurisumala Ashram


The Kurisumala Ashram, established in 1955 over an area of 88 acres is a Catholic monastery that attracts monks from across the world because of its unique mix of spiritual elements and practices from the Christian and Indian traditions. 

Inside the Ashram compound, there is a church, a guesthouse, a library, a satsang hall, a vegetable garden, a dairy farm, a bread-baking unit and a milk processing centre. The Cistercian abbey here was built in 1958 by Abbot Francis Acharya of Belgium and Fr. Brede Griffiths of England. The monks here wear saffron robes, walk barefoot and eat vegetarian food.  The surroundings offer a tranquil ambience that is ideal for meditation and rejuvenation.

Pine Forest


Covered by pines, giving you a romantic trekking space for hours. You could spend long hours in the area. Also nearby is a commercial market where we could buy homemade sweets.

Green Meadows


The Barren hills of Kolahalamedu are one of the most beautiful attractions of Vagamon. There are never ending stretches of short hills covered with velvet of green Grass....Like the Windows XP Default Wallpaper. The annual Kerala paragliding Festival Takes place here.

Suicide Point


The steep rocky hill tract is almost mountainous in character. The cliff and ravine topography area is ideal for adventure activities that would attract people who like gliding, rope climbing, jumping and the like. There can be viewing pavilions too, as gufas in the vertical surface of the hill which would attract people for staying inside. This can be carved out of the rocks and would provide an adventurous stay.

Water Falls


At Vagamon there are several waterfalls with grassy hillocks stretching into the forest on one side and ending at the cliff on the other. This large tract of land has a small stream originating at the lake and going throughout.
On way to Moolamatton, at 9 Kms from Vagamon is the Edadu Waterfalls and at 11 kms from Vagamon is Ellapully Waterfalls.

Tea Estate


You can witness one of the greatest tea estates in Kerala, here. There are many tea estate and the major ones are Pulikkanam Estate, MMJ Plantations. You can get permission from the Estate office and have a walk through the estate gardens and this for sure is going to be a worth the time you spend here.
